The Phone Call Is Not a Spec
The Phone Call Is Not a Spec
The order looked clean. You cut. You weld. Then the call. Wrong span. Wrong finish. Wrong how it meets the house. Now you own the remake, the delay, and a relationship you spent years on.
This is not bad luck. It is what happens when a conversation is asked to hold a structure.
The intake is the product
A typical custom order still starts as a vague email or a phone sketch. The rep asks follow-ups. Some get answered. Some do not. The quote is built on the gaps. Production starts. The question nobody asked becomes the beam you cannot use.
Voice and email are good at talk and bad at structure. The buyer has not been trained on your checklist. They do not know weathered is four coatings with four lead times. They do not know a longer run and a shorter run are different structures. Your rep is transcribing on the fly and filling silence with guesses. Nobody is careless. The channel is.
The remake is not only material. It is a stalled queue and a buyer who will not send the next yard your way. The root is almost always the same. The information capture at the start was incomplete.

Flip who holds the checklist
A configurator does not ask open questions and hope. It walks the yard through valid choices. Impossible combinations never appear. By the time they finish, the floor has a spec, not a transcript.
At the quote, the number is built from selections, not estimates. At approval, they confirm the thing they made, not a paragraph they nodded at. At the saw, the packet is generated from those selections. Nobody retyped the overhang from an inbox.
The hours you spend chasing a missing dimension are not a badge of craft. Craft is the profile. The missing dimension is a hole in the intake.
Mass production never had this problem because the SKU was the spec. One-of-one outdoor work has to collect the yard. When the product collects its own spec, the shop stops guessing and the buyer stops being surprised.
Molldi moves the spec out of the call and into the structure.
