The Catalog Is a List of Other People's Yards
The Catalog Is a List of Other People's Yards
Open a typical outdoor catalog and you can feel the compromise. Three widths. Two roof pitches. Four colors that photograph well. The one that almost fits the slab.
That is not a product line. That is a list of other people's yards, printed as if they were yours.
What the catalog actually sells
The catalog exists because the shop needed something to show. A best seller. A SKU a salesperson can remember. A photo that works on Instagram. None of that is the patio in front of their house.
The buyer already has a wall, a downspout, a door that swings the wrong way, a neighbor they do not want to look at. They do not want your most popular span. They want that yard, standing.
So they ask for a custom quote. You reopen engineer-to-order. The week stretches. The catalog was supposed to save you from that. It did not.
The friction is the SKU
A SKU is a factory convenience. It is also a wall. Once the offer is three widths, every real yard is a special. Specials eat the estimator. Specials eat the floor. Specials teach the buyer that custom means wait.
The thing you already know how to make (posts, beams, roof, finish) is not the problem. The problem is pretending those parts only come in the sizes that printed well.
The rail is the rules, not the SKU
Write the rules once. Span that the line can cut. Posts that the kit already stocks. Finishes that belong on that part. Then let this yard pick inside those rules.
That is the shipped thing. A one-of-one that is still the same manufacturing line. The buyer sees their patio. The shop sees a job they already know how to run.
What gets removed is the fake choice: catalog or chaos. You do not need a second factory for personal. You need the structure to be configurable, and the order to be the structure.
Design made personal
Personal is not a mood. It is this span, this wall, this finish, on a kit you already own. Mass production made everything the same so it could be cheap. The other mistake is making everything unique so it can never ship.
The yard is the spec. The catalog was never going to be.
