The deposit cleared. The shop drawing left engineering. Aluminum is on the saw.

Then the call. The west louvers should open the other way. The post has to move for a downspout nobody mentioned. The floor stops.

On paper a change order looks like extra money. On the floor it is scrap, a reshuffled week, and a buyer who now associates you with friction.

They did not get indecisive

They approved a quote they could not see.

"Post mount type B, offset 150mm" is a sentence an engineer can build from. It is not a patio. A flat elevation is closer, and still a translation. The person who lives in that yard is doing mental CAD. Most of that CAD is wrong. They find out when the truck is already booked, or when a phone photo from the booth arrives and the span feels different than the table they had in mind.

That gap is the change order. Not the phone call. The phone call is the receipt.

Shops tell themselves the revision is billable. Audit the real cost and the comfort thins out. A job pulled off a welder cascades into the next three. A custom-cut profile does not become a different job. The packet gets rebuilt. The buyer, who asked for the change, still bristles at the new invoice. None of that is a customer problem. It is a picture problem.

Sign the structure, not the paragraph

What removes the revision is not a sterner contract. It is letting them stand under the thing before you cut it.

Span, height, roof, how it meets the house. The model moves when they move a post. A long run that needs a center support grows the post on its own. The price moves with the choice, so an upgrade is a decision, not a surprise invoice. When they sign, they are signing the structure. Same object the floor will build.

Craft is the joint and the beam end. Restarting a job because the drawing was a poor picture of a yard is not craft.

Mass production hid this by selling three widths and calling it a choice. One-of-one outdoor work cannot hide. The yard is specific. The approval has to be too.
